96 A4 Question
I have just purchased a 96 sudi A4 quattro. I noticed that when I first start the car there is what looks to be the " 1n2 " flashing where the trip odometer is. Anybody know what this is? I am new to audis and no nothing about them. The car also has a check engine light on. The guy I purchased the car from said it was from a bad EGR valve. He was told this by his mechanic. He never had it replaced as it is 408 dollars for one from Autozone and they are not really restrictive on emissions here in south carolina. Can I take the EGR valve out and clean it in gasoline or solvent? Where is the EGR valve located and how hard is it to get out?

First of all the ln2 is an indication that your car is under teh millage that suggests extra maintenance, it is a factory set interval that repeats so they fact it is on is not a bed thing.
If your car is throwing a CEL then your EGR valve might be the problem.

, I believe that if you take off the ingnition coils on the passanger side of the engine right up next to the manifold is where you will find this part (or something that looks a lot like it)

I'll look it up tonight. LN1 is a 10,000 mile service (Oil Change). LN2 is a 20,000 service (Fuel Filter andevery other one a particulate filter). On Pre-1997 A4's youmight need a cable for both to be reset but on my (1998) A4 I reset it from instructions in the drivers manual.
I don't think you need a cable for it anyway on post 97 A4s. Not much help since yours is a 96! but if anyone googles this, might clarify matters.
EGV is just in front of the driver at the top of the engine (looking from the open bonnet it's on the left) It's bolted on to the engine by four bolts on a flange, and has a vacuum tube running (cabin side). Replacing the vacuum tube is supposed to be a quick (& cheap) fix if you try it first. If the valve is silted up, you'd probably waqnt to change the vacuum tube anyway. Cost less than a fiver.
