Default 97 Auto Shifter Slack (bushing?)

Hey guys, im new to the forum, im posting for a friend who has a 97 a4 1.8t auto. He doesnt really use the internet(crazy) so im gona ask away for him. When you go to shift into d in his car its still in neutral, but if u go to "2" and back to D its normal. Im guessing its the shifter bushing or maybe linkage cable itself? Its fine going into R and N, i had a similar problem on my maxima and it was the bushing, does anyone know what it is, and maybe a short description on how to replace it? Thanks.

it may be cable itself, i was thinking of the 5-speeds and i know they have alot of slack because fo the bushing that connects the shift rod to the tranny, best just get under there and check it out.
