No, a faulty steering rack only controls the steering back and forth, the tie rod ends are what controls the pitch of the tires. Un-less the rack was locked to one side LOL.

I used to have an infiniti G20 that I had to replace the rear axle on....I chose a refurbished one.....Any time I drove over 60 mph, there was an annoying drone coming from the axle. I have no idea what was actually causing the drone, but it was definitely due to the replaced axle. Are you the original owner? If not, do you have a truly complete vehicle history?

Just my (most likely) irrelevant two cents.

is it constant or does it change with road surfaces. i get a humming noise in my car and i have cheap all season tires. they only hum on this strech of road by my school and on older patches of highway. on asphalt and such it fairly quiet, try driving on different surfaces.

Actually, it was constant, but it sounds like road surfaces that are your biggest culprit. I have a few stretches of rough road on my commute and my Continental SportContact2 tires get very noisy. In general, my A4 produces a lot of road noise. A6, not so much.

ORIGINAL: thecheda

I own a 2003 a4 1.8t with the sports package. I recently have been noticing a sound that hums inside the cabin. NO its not the turbo, but a humming that seems to be coming from the tires.

Initially I went to the Audi Dealership in newport, ca, and they diagnosed it as a problem with the rear wheels and their alignment or balancing. They said that when a car has low treads, it will make noise by rubbing against (something within the tire well).

I recently replaced the back two that were coming to their ends, and the shop balanced them as well.

Still the sound is there and I cannot seem to find a solution.

Please help.

Any ideas?
show me a field full of bulls and ill show you some bull ****.
if the tread wears equal then there is no problem there ( bearing noise ) is different it increases with speed, to check the tyres out jack the wheels off the ground and use your hands to feel the tread for deformities

Could be simple as low tire pressure or knot in the tire or again could be tie rod ends. Let us know what you figure out.
