Getting fiancee's 1999 A4 back on road, air con is stuck on and temp control and other switches do not operate now. Garage diagnosed fault on ambient temp sensor (G89) code 00787. Car is good in all other respects

Managed to find it and remove it and it is open circuit using multi-tester. It's the sensor in the air con fan inlet manifold bit of a nightmare to get at but managed!

Getting switch from dealer but wondered if anyone knows if this sensor can cause the fault as worried it could be the climate control unit as v expensive to change for relatively old car.
