Which A4 is easier/cheaper to maintain?
Hello all. I'm thinking about purchasing an A4 Avant. No matter which engine I choose, it will be a manual transmission. I have a few questions about maintenence:
- Which engine would be less costly to maintain (ie. more reliable), the 3.0 or the 1.8T?
- Which of the two engines would be easier to work on?
My hunch is that the 1.8T would be less reliable, but easier to work on at home, while the 3.0 might be more reliable, but that engine bay seems awfuly cramped and hard to work on. Anyone have any DIY experience with the 3.0? How are routine things like spark plugs, oil changes, O2 sensor replacement, timing belts, etc?
Finally, I've found a good looking 2003 3.0 Avant withthe 6 speed at a good price. The problem is, it has 93,000 miles. The dealer is willing to give me a good price and pay for part of the timing belt job (which hasn't been done), but I'm still unsure. I plan on keeping this car for a long, long time and want to make the right choice, long term. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

yes you are right with the 3.0 being more reliable. If you use the search functions at the top of the page it will give you a comparison. since the v6 is naturally aspirated meaning no turbo there are less things to go wrong but there are far less mods for it. 93k is a lot for an 03 my 99 has only 89k. But if the timing belt is done it should last you a long time with proper maintenence. Good Luck

Thanks for the links. I've read the "A4 for noobs" thread before and it has lots of good info. They didn't really get much into the 3.0 from a maintanence perspective though, which is what I'm really after. I know it will be more trouble-free because it doesn't have a turbo, but it still needs parts here and there. The 1.8T looked pretty easy to wrench on (O2 sensor was right up front, plugs, coils, etc. were all in plain view, etc). The 3.0 is intimidating looking and if it going to be a PIA to replace parts and cost a fortune at the dealer, it may not be the best choice. I should add that I have a VAG-COM and experience in the VW world (I have a Jetta 2.0T and a Jetta 2.slow) plus lots of experience wrenching onthe 2 BMWs I've had.
One other question: how are parts like the exhaust systems and manual transmissionson these cars? Do they hold up well? Thanks!
