A4 engine noise/vibration in cab
I've just bought a 2002 A4 1.9 TDi ( I think this is known as a B6 model!) and really happy with car except for one annoyance.
While driving I think I'm experiencing more engine noise and vibration in the cabin then I should usually, almost as if there is an engine mounting problem.
Before I take this to my local dealership I'm wondering if this model of vehicle is a bit noisier than most cars?

Nigel, these diesels arent usually that noisy; it should be quiet in the cab.
If you have checked the alignment and it's OK, I'd suggest looking under the bonet while the engine is revd in short bursts to see if there's alot of movement. This will tell you what state the engine mounts are in. Has it had a recent clutch? If the gearbox isn't fitted properly to the engine, it may have worked loose and cause excessive vibration / noise. Its worth checking the exhaust too; the smallest hole can sound loud at certain engine speeds. Check it bt blocking the tailpipe with your hand and listen for unusual noise (wear a rubber glove, the exhaust gasses can penetrate the skin at high pressure!) Finally, It might be a dodgy wheel baring; Jack up each front wheel and see if there's any play when you 'rock' the wheel by holding the top and bottom and push/pull to try to twist the wheel (not rotate). Any rocking tells you the barings need replacing.
It doesn't sound like anything expensive, good luck.
