a4 with over 100k miles
hey i have never owned an a4 before and was wondering if one with over 100k miles is reliable for at least a year (estimate over 10k miles to be driven that year). if i were to purchase one with say 100k miles or more what would you suggest to look out for and what maintenance should i check to see was done? would i be up to my neck in repairs or would i get good use out of it?? i dont know if this is the best figuring, but i was wondering since if the car is over 100k miles a lot of the required maintenance could have already been done. i am looking to spend about $7K on an a4 so if anyone in the new york area has one for sale around that price i could possible be interested. thanks for any replies.
Audis are reliable cars to begin, an A4 can go for 200k without any major repairs necessary. If your price range is $7000 you'll probably get something about 115k+ but there are deals to be had out there. Heres a good link that might help in the search. The timing belt is a major issue with Audis, make sure the car has records of it being changed at the regular service intervals. On Audis over 100k the control arms begin to show signs of excessive wear, they squeek and clunk, so sooner or later you'll have to change them. Overall the drivetrain is solid and you won't have to worry about anything major, well except the turbo.
Like any used car, how long it lasts depends on how the owner took care of it.
My car is now at 150K miles and runs like a champ. Like all german cars. the parts are expensive, and because they are complex, they require a lot of maintenance.
Common problems are engine sludge on the 1.8, front control arms, wheel bearings. Check to see if the timing belt has been changed. Unless you do it yourself, it runs anaywhere between 600 to 1000 dollars inc parts.
As with any used car, have it checked by an indepenent mechanic that specializes in VW/Audi before you buy. No sense in buying someone else's problems.
Either way, plan on spending 1000 dollars to fix stuff in the first year that the previous owner didn't do.

Yup, except for some minor electronic stuff that I can ignore my 2000 is holding its own but only has 67K on it. The control arm squeak thing is annoying but the replacement cost I was quoted (about 300 per side) isn't that bad considering.
