Is the A4 as unreliable as reviews make it seem?

Default Is the A4 as unreliable as reviews make it seem?

I'm new here, hello! I've always wanted an Audi A4. I stumbled across an '01 1.8 automatic Quattro. And it's orange: I'm in love. 127,000 miles in a price range I can work with. But the reviews of every little thing breaking is a bit deterring. What do you think? I can afford to maintain it, but can't afford to have every little thing breaking. It's at a smaller used car lot which makes me nervous as well. What do you think? What would you do? It's $4k. Thanks in advance!!

you can google any car imaginable and every single car you google will be riddled with posts about problems they have with them so you have to take those with a grain of salt.

the first car i purchased for myself was from a tiny car lot in a small town i used to live in. they had maybe 15 cars to choose from. i paid $2300 for a 1995 dodge neon. it had around 120k miles when i bought it. i drove it for a few years and never had a problem with it. just make sure you do a good once over on the car before making any moves.
ask the dealership if there is any maintenance history for the car, or ask for the car fax report. those usually tell if there was any maintenance done while the car was still under warranty, which will tell you if the major maintenance was done as it should be.

take it for a test drive, and dont be easy on it. you want to make sure to listen to any noise and feel for anything that doesnt feel right. make sure you get the car to operating temp before your done. check and make sure the heat works correctly too.
when your park after the drive, let it sit and check for and dripping fluids.

its also good to pick the car apart as good as you can and make it noticeable. that will typically get them to haggle with you on the price, but dont let them see how in love with the car you actually are.

the one major thing i would say to really check out thoroughly is the transmission. make sure it doesnt leak and has no problem what so ever going into/ out of gear and shift like butter!
good luck!

The biggest thing is maintenance history. 1.8T engines have more problems than V6 engines. Check the FAQ link at the top of the B5 subforum for a lot of info.
