there are different kinds. i have an RCA connection one but radio shack's is different. i think the one they have, you connect to your power wire, rather than the speaker wires

 

if you wired you system right you should not be getting any whine. make sure your grounds are very good and the power you are using is not receiving any interference. i would say that it is very unlikely that one some audis you need them and others you dont.
