I am about to replace the head gasket on a 1998 A4 (1.8t). Are there any special tools required for lifting the head or undoing the head studs\bolts?

 

I know on some VWs that there is a special tool used on the head bolts. It's a 6-point star like a torx, but not a standard torx size. The best is to get a bentley and see what tools are needed. Then check www.zelenda.com for the tool. there is also a head alignment pin used to line up the head and help reinstalling it.

 

hmmm...the bentley doesn't identify any special tools. I don't know.

 

I guess I will find out soon...argh
