Any thoughts on "PowerChip"?
Im looking around for a chip for my 2004 A4 3.0. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with PowerChip? Please let me know your thoughts on this. Are there any other chips that are reccomended? Thanks for any info you can throw my way.<IMG style="WIDTH: 20px; HEIGHT: 20px" height=37 src=smileys/smiley14.gif width=59 border="0"></P>
Didn't someone here decide to go with Powerchip a while back? PowerChip USA or something?
Recommended chips??? Well now - GIAC is top of my list. Then you have APR, Wetteraurer, MTM, ABT, Neuspeed, Upsolute... I would recommend any of those before Powerchip.
Note that I am not sure of they all make chips for the 3.0 engine, but thats just a list to add to your research.
cheers

Generally, chipping a normally aspirated engine is probably a waste of money, especially a performance tuned engine. Chipping a turbo car, however, makes a big difference. I'm not sure what the cost is for your engine, but I suspect you could put the money to better use--not to mention avoiding warranty problems.</P>
yep - NA engines get very little out of chips...
Wetteraurer does make a chip for the 3.0L. Expensive for 15hp though. Upsolute has a chip for the 3.0 also, costs less but delivers less power.
Either way its cheaper that a supercharger, and paired with a good exhaust you will get noticable gain.
Wetteraurer quote:
"Our new Passat/Audi 3.0L 30V power advancement program offers exemplary gains for a normally aspirated engine, including a much improved throttle response. This overall improvement is something that you are sure to enjoy, and that you can definitely feel! Our software includes an advancement of the ignition timing from the factory's conservative setting, thereby increasing hp and improving fuel mileage. This improvement in gas mileage will occur under normal driving conditions. If the car is driven in a spirited fashion, expect to consume slightly *more* fuel then in the stock configuration. We deliver power and greater fuel efficiency (under normal driving conditions) without engine knocking or increased emissions. We do, however, recommend the highest-octane fuel available in your area. Our development and dyno testing was completed with a Ram Air performance air filter installed. We highly recommend this excellent product with your chip purchase. The filter is not included with the purchase of the chip. We do not publish 0-60 times due to the subjectivity of the road, weather, and driver conditions.
Performance increases are as follows:
220 hp to 235 hp
222 ft./lbs. to 244 ft./lbs. of torque
Price: $595.00 "

It's also questionable that the gains are at the wheels or at the crank. Regardless, the money would be better spent on a performance exhaust, but don't expect significant gains there either. Forced induction is the really only way to achieve significant gains with today's modern engines.</P>
Having said that, Wett does subliminally point out a gain that may be worth the money; namely, responsiveness. DBW cars with electronically controlled throttles can benefit from a well-tuned chip. But, it will be in driveability and not in overall top-end performance.</P><edited><editID>GTIBlak</editID><editDate>38058.3511342593</editDate></edited>

Depends on how much money you have doesn't it? <img border="0" src=smileys/smiley2.gif border="0"> but in general I would have to agree. DBW does experience throttle lag and it may help, but it won't add to "raceability"... I doubt the numbers are quoted at the wheels either.
