I am changing my belt sometime in the next two weeks. Should be an experience since I have mostly done work on a 94 gmc yukon. Hell I could climb into the thing to work with the audi things will be quite a bit different. Changing the belt, waterpump, tensioner and thermostat should not be too hard just time consuming. I have the bently manual coming on monday and I am hoping that there is some more info in there.

Just did it on my TT last weekend. Took me 10 hrs, but thats a transverse, and you gotta remove the motor mount to get the belt off.

Heres another bit o' information.... on certain model/year cars, there was a problem with the tensioner failing, not the belt, and your valves won't care which goes when the time comes, if you catch my drift. Better safe than sorry. Dieselgeek.com sells a full kit for purdy cheap. Check them out.

Oh, and whats the service interval on the 2.8 timing belt? On the 1.8, every 60 is good practice. You would be coming up on the service interval if its done every 60, assuming it was done at 60K.

Good luck, whatever way you go.

Changing the timing on the 1.8T is a piece of cake. Search for Jestnomen's posts about the 2.8 timing belt change. He described belt change once. He said that it was a PITA.

Remove a valve cover. You should be able to see the belt. If you can clearly read what's on the belt, it has been replaced recently.
