Audi Noob- a few questions...
Looooong time VW owner but I just traded in my Passat Variant for
my new (used) '05 A4 Avant 3.0 and had a few questions to this
learned group.
Parking light dash light, is this on the entire time the headlights/parking lights
are on? This seems a bit silly. I can see why it would be on if you only
had your parking lights on since you can't tell from inside the car. Why wouldn't this light go out when you turn on the headlights?
Mirror compass/autodimming light, just noticed this morning when I turned off the car these stayed on. Do they stay on all the time like the headlight switch indicator?
The MFA/DID doesn't have total distance traveled. My Passat had this in addition to everything the Audi has. I can't believe that Audi would decide not to include total distance traveled. I always liked that feature when traveling. Is there something I need to program to get this to pop up? I have the VAG tool.
Previous owner chewed up the emergency handle button (don't ask me how). How difficult is it to remove it? Similar to the Passat (I have the Bentley for the Passat).
The wood surround of the shifter has a big ol' scratch in it also, anybody know how to take this off? The previous owner was less than careful.
I got the Atlas grey w/Platinum interior. The interior is not grey, it's not brown, it's a a cross between a grey taupe, or is it a brown grey? I'm trying to get some aftermarket sheepskins and floor mats and am having a hard time picking out a color. If anybody has already gone through this, any help would be appreciated.
Have only had the car a few days, but am really starting to like it. A very upscale Passat. Quieter, smoother, and higher quality materials in the cabin.
Anybody need a big ol' blue Bentley manual for a Passat?

You are kidding about the sheep skin right? Read your owners manual about most of the other stuff... The mirror compass should turn off shortly after the car is turned off, along with your digital odometer and clock.... But, please, dont get sheepskin seat covers... Thats just degrading no matter what color you interior is..

Thanks for the info on the compass.

I've read the owner's manual, and it doesn't say a thing about whether the parking dash light should go off when the headlights are turned on.

Parking dash light? Im having a hard time picturing what that would look like.. What does it look like? If you have daytime driving lights that come on automaticaly that might be what its for.. But I am kind of lost as to what a parking dash light is...?

I could be a SA and tell you to look in the manual, but I'll refrain...
and I don't have DRLs on the car.

A little green light right above the MFA that shows two lights with beams coming out. (can't find a jpg right now).

I have that light in my '99 A4 as well, and no, I don't know of a way to turn it off. It comes on if I have my headlights on or just the parkings lights/dash lights.
It doesn't really bother me.

What is an SA?
If everyone has the light then I won't worry about it. Just didn't know if I was doing
something wrong.
Onward and upward...

That little green light is indeed the "parking light" indicator according to my owners manual. Since I always have my lights on auto, I find it helpful in letting me know whether the lights are on or not. And yes, it does stay on as long as the lights are on.
