NEED HELP NEWBIE!!!
I just bought an 2000 audi a4 1.8t (FF) and i want to know how to check if the timing belt has been changed or not. it has 105xxx miles on it. i love the car and want to do everything possible (budget minded) to keep it runnin perfect. also i called audi dealership for prices on timing belt, tensioners, waterpump. and they said they need to know what type of 1.8t motor i have (they told me there where 3 diff ones?) im kinda confused. i came from the honda scene. also.. i have the sport package and i think it comes with sport susspension.. should i upgrade suspension to like TEINS? or the factory sport is good? sorry for blasting lots of questions but this is a whole new animal for me.. thanks..
If it's a 2000, you probably have a ATW. To check which one you have, take the engine cover off and near the firewall on top of the motor you should see a little sticker. There will be a 3 letter engine code on it. The previous owner didn't have any info? You should also get a quote from a specialty garage. The stealership will rob you blind. Also make sure that the mechanic you take it to knows wtf they're doing. If they say it's $300, they're going to fork something up since the parts alone will cost that much.
For the suspension, it really epends on your budget and what you're looking for. If you just want to lower it a little and give it a little aggressive handling, you could go with H&R springs and Bilstein struts. If you replace the springs, make sure to upgrade your shocks also. Otherwise you'll be paying for it later. Or if you're looking to adjust your ride height, you could get some coilovers.
Just tell us what you're looking to do with your car and we can point you in the right direction.

im lookin to keep it as clean as possible and maybe 200whp would be nice. but i also want to keep really reliable. so my mods now im thinkin of is a decent size fmic (nothing to big or revealing), bov, chip, and filter. thats all i thought of so far. i have a triptronic so i dont know how that tranny responds to mods. so basically clean and simple.
another thing that i noticed is my gauge cluster is going out.. the leds are all messed up... ive seen othere threads on here thats has the same cluster problem so i guess its a defect?
for suspension how is the eibach springs on the audi website? and what shocks do you reccomend for a car like mines? thanks for you help!!!

Yes, it's my car.
A K04 turbo kit and tip chip is all you really need. Skip the fmic.
Do NOT get a BOV. Audi's were not designed with them in mind. For a description of why, click here.
There's a list of perfomance sites here.
You can also check out the sponsors and vendors section of the forum. (shameless plug for AF vendors)
