auto vs. manual
I love my manual...its great. The only time it gets annoying is leaving my school parking lot every afternoon in bumper to bumper traffic....but its really not that bad, its a good left leg workout haha....
I dont know if manual really keeps you more focused on the road though...when you want to be more focused, manual is a lot of fun...especially on back roads and twisties....but if you are tired and just driving, once you learn manual it becomes second nature. Most of the time i dont even think about it when i shift...my body just feels the car and i subconciously change to the appropriate gear.
If you cant drive a stick, it's a really good thing to learn. It will give you the ability to drive any car if you have to, plus its fun/cool.

Id like to add that my first car was stick and i had to teach myself how to drive it because no one in my family knew how. My other 3 cars after that were stick and if it werent for my wife being the one with excellent credit to finance our audi at such a low rate, it would not be auto. i can live with it, but not forever. I bet though that some manual drivers wish they could shift gears on the steering wheel every once in a while.
I love my manual. My first car though was an automatic, but all my cars after that have been manuals. Much more fun to drive
. The only thing I don't like about my manual is driving in traffic. I just deal with it. When I have the opportunity to take the shortcuts home & miss some traffic, then I realize that a manual is WAY more fun to drive. My gf won't drive a manual... she's set in her ways w/ an automatic. Tried to teach her once. She got it up to 2nd gear & that's it.
It also depends on where you're driving. If you do alot of freeway driving, then a manual is definitely the way to go. But, if you do most of your driving in the city, like San Francisco, then it may make more sense to get an auto or a tip.

Not at all high. I agree with you that stick is the way to go. I wouldn't have it any other way. But I was pointing out that city driving, like in San Francisco, it might make make more sense to get an auto or a tip. If you've ever been in SF, it has lots of hills, some of them pretty steep. The thought of f*cking up your clutch when going up hill from a standing start just makes me cringe. Plus, parallel parking on a slope is a bitch w/ a stick. Anybody who's driven in a hilly city knows what I mean. Besides, I don't go out to SF that often. When I do go out there, I'm usually driving my gf's automatic Camry. She'd rather we put the miles on her Camry than my A4.
Be smart about your choice. If you drive in a ton of bumper to bumper traffic with only the occasional "spirited" driving, get the Tip and save your leg (as well as the labor and cost of replacing clutches). If this is not the case, and you're not an amputee, get the manual. Just make your choice based on what you'll be doing most of the time. As much fun as a stick shift is, if you spend most of your time inching around in traffic, it's not worth it.
