First off, 2001 30v 2.8 6 quattro

My secondary cooling fan is not coming on, ever. The car runs perfect, never goes above the center tick mark on the temp gauge if the AC is off, regardless of whether your stuck in traffic idling or moving. The temp gauge seems to be reading accuratly and responding to my temp issues, so i suppose the ECT is fine. The coolant level is perfect. The AC functions great, nice and cool, when moving and there is air moving over the condensor, but when you sit and idle, it will cycle on and off and the temp of the engine very slowly starts to rise. If it does rise, as long as you turn the AC off the engine will re-stablize to normal temps in a few minutes, even if it just sits and idles. Either the fan has gone totally, or its a sensor, relay, or switch somewhere but I was wondering if anyone has had this problem and where they started looking or what was your ailment. You can purchase a new temp sensor or fan switch at ECS, but I didnt want to start buying parts if they were the cause ya know. Thanks!

you need a new aux fan temp sensor
PN - 191 959 481C

To test the sensor:

Turn the key to the ON position but do not start! Make sure your car is in gear or in park and the ebrake fully engaged...

Jack up the drivers side and please use a jack stand... I have had a buddy of mine die from his head being crushed under his car just because he was going to be under there for "Just a second."

On the driver side you have an upper and lower radiator hose... On the lower hose about 4 inches away from the radiator should be an electrical connector going to your fan control switch... Remove the connector from the switch and bring it down to where you have enough room to make a jump or two... Should have three pins in there...

On the electical connector, pin 3 is your ground and 1 and 2 are your low and high respectivly... Jump from pin 3 to 1. Does the fan come on? What about pin 3 to 2? Should come in with a high speed... If it works here, then it should definatly be your switch...

must give props to EWOK_Fetus over on AZ for the test procedure cut and paste

RE: Aux electric fan never coming on, effecting temp and AC...
The lower radiator hose on my car is on the right side (passenger side), and there is a blue temp sensor about 4 inchs from the radiator itself. The switch is blue in color and when I took of the harness to it there are 4 wires in there, not three as you have stated. I jumped each of them and nothing happened. Should I assume the fan is dead, or is that the incorrect harness to check? ECS has, under my engine, two different switchs under the "cooling" section on their website. A few different temps are avalible on one of the switchs, and it obviously has three pins, as you had stated, and seems to be there part you discribed. The other one resembles what I saw and has four pins. Does my car have two different potential switches for the auxiliary fan? Or is this a switch of design on AUDI's part mid-year for that year of manufacture? I'm going in to the engine in a few thousand miles to do a full timing belt replace, water pump etc, and if I have to replace the fan I will at that point, but I might as well replace those switchs (one, or both if thats the case) too while I'm at it.

Thanks.

Here is the fan test procedure for the 2.8

Coolant fan, checking Test requirements Fuse No. 34 OK Coolant Fan Control (FC) thermal switch -F18- OK
Test procedureDisconnect 3-pin harness connector from coolant Fan Control (FC) thermal switch -F18- at bottom left of radiator. Switch ignition on. Bridge terminal -1- and terminal -2- of harness connector using auxiliary cables from VW1594 connector test kit. Coolant fan -V7- must run on 1st speed. Bridge terminal -1- and terminal -3- of harness connector using auxiliary cables from VW1594 connector test kit. Coolant fan -V7- must run on 2nd speed. If 1st or 2nd fan speed does not run:
Locate and repair open circuit using wiring diagram: Electrical Wiring Diagrams, Troubleshooting & Component Locations
If no open circuit can be found:
Replace coolant fan -V7-.
