Is it terrible not to have chains on all 4 wheels for a quattro?? I was thinking about getting 2 sets one for front and one for back... just curious on that

r u sure about that. I met a guy that lives in big bear with my car and he used them on the front only. So if i had awd with snow tires i wouldn't of needed them?
You can call the DOT and ask, maybe it varies depending on the road? I know when we went to tahoe in a subaru, had awd & snow tires in R2, they weren't required, BUT we put them on anyways.

Chains mounted on all 4 with 4WD/AWD - perfect acceleration, crisp steering, super braking. However, part time systems will show understeer. Full time 4WD systems are best. This is what everyone should have for snow and ice. Be careful anyway.

Chains mounted on front axle with 4WD/AWD - good acceleration, good steering, good braking. However, since the rear wheels have no lateral guidance, the rear end might come around - fast. Not good. Feather your brakes. Go slow.

Chains mounted on rear axle with 4WD/AWD - good acceleration, lousy steering (no lateral guidance), so so braking (remember, 80% of brake force goes to front wheels and isn't put to use without chains). No fishtailing. Best compromise for 4WD with only one pair of chains. Go slow.

ok... thanks. I just wasnt sure if it could screw something up because the chained wheels would be more likely to spin slower than the unchained wheels

Hmm.. I don't see people use chains in New Jersey but the roads are still tear up and cover by potholes.

Chains are illegal in some states because they tear up the road.
