my car is a 1998.5 a4 quattro, i have the regular base stereo system with no cd changer. Is the wiring already installed and ran to the trunk for the factory changer? If i buy the factory changer off of ebay etc will it be plug and play or will i have to upgrade the head unit as well? I understand it will probably be cheaper to simply buy an aftermarket deck, but i want to keep the stock and classy appearance.

how classy is a tape deck? Im dying to get rid of mine

 

By classy i think he means it looks like it belongs there/matches the rest of the interior. Thats the same way i feel too. Im not sure if the car is prewired for it already, but i dont think it is. You may also have to recode the radio to comunicate with the cd changer.

 

its not the tape deck thats classy, its the matched interior lighting, ***** etc that make it look like it fits in, where as an aftermarket cd deck would look tacky and out of place IMO. I think my car has the luxury package(if there is such a thing), with the real leather, power seat, real wood grain trim etc, and i think an aftermarket deck would look like crap.

If i MUST go with an aftermarket deck i need to find one that automatically dims, and has the same red lighting. I"d much MUCH rather be able to retrofit in a changer to the stock headunit, though.

So no one knows if the wiring is already run? Or how about this, is there a stock cd player that i can swap in?
