Battery replacement
Hellomy girlfriend hasa 2003 Audi A4 quattro. I need to replace the battery but I notice that there is a separate cable that runs off the top of the battery, down the firewall towards the driver's side and appears to go into the cab of the car, behind the vacumm box. This wire is separate from the positive and negative wires. Is it a vent tube, or does it run something else? I just was going to replace it with a battery from Auto Zone, but wanted to make sure this wire does not run some other function. I have extensive experience on American cars, but little on Audi's so any help is appreciated. Also do I need the battery back 9v back up to change the battery, or can I do it without it? And where do I find the radio unlock code, as the battery is dead and when I jump started it, the radio was in safe mode.
I think that wire might go to an alarm or something but i am not sure. Take a picture and post it and it will help out a little more probably. And no you don't need the 9v thing. Just unplug it and plug it back in with the new battery. For the radio code, check the manual and also in the spare tire area in the trunk. Also once you put the new battery in you will want to do a throttle body alignment. Basically turn the car's ignition to the on position but do not start the car. Let it sit there for about 5-10 min and then start it.

It should be a vent tube. My replacement battery from Pepboys came with it.
As to radio code, for about 19 dollars you can by a "code saver" which is a small battery that plugs into the cig lighter and keeps enough power going so that the codes aren't lost when you disconnect the battery.
