Default burning smell and squeal

Okay, so I have a 1998 a4 quattro 2.8 manual tran. The problem is that yesterday it started making a squealing sound when I engaged the clutch. It also makes the sound, although softer, when idling in neutral. There is also a burning smell. Before I have someone take apart the tranny, is there anyone who knows what the problem is? Or am I screwed and in need of a new clutch? Thanks...

I was thinking a belt too, but what belt would be effected by the clutch? It squeals from the moment i depress the clutch until I completely let of. The clutch seems to be working fine. No slipping or grinding or stalling. I have no idea where to start looking.
