Buying a 1999 A4, need some help
i am posting for a friend who is thinking of buying a 1999 A4, 86000 miles, front wheel drive, all stock car. car is not perfect since it is nearly 6 yers old, but not bad shape. what does he need to think about forking over the loot? how long does the turbo last, any recall issues? what are some concerns and issues he should be considering? i looked on alldata for recalls and all seem very minor, but i thought i would come here for some real world advice. thank you.
Here's a quote I seem to be repeating often:
Before you purchase, check the control arms for wear, get the turbo checked for proper boost levels, and check all hoses within the turbo system for tears. The rest of your inspection should be like any other car.
After your purchase:
1. Check the DV and upgrade it, if it wasn't already.
2. Check and replace the coolant sensor with the latest OE version ($5 DIY fix).
3. Check and replace the oil with synthetic, if it hasn't been switched already; change the oil often.

ImolaS4 pretty much points to eveything needed - just a couple thoughts. Check the DV definitely - don't need to really upgrade unless you chip cuz the oem is more than adequate for the 7-9 psi a k03 puts out stock. But since the TT 710 valve is so cheap its just as well. Also make sure the Timing Belt AND tensioner has been changed (with new style tensioner).
Listen when you drive for rubbing sounds - wheel bearings on A4's tend to die around 70-80K. Listen for control arm squeaks or clunks.
