Buying 2000 A4 1.8
Hey everyone just joined to the forum today, happy to be a member. I am in the process of looking at buying a 2000 A4 1.8T, here are the details; it has 75,000km, looks to be fully loaded including power everything, sunroof, auto/tiptronic trans, leather interior and woodgrain interior. Asking price is $8900 USD. I will be taking the car for a road test later today/tomorrow. I have done some research on trouble areas on the internet and from what I've found the main area of concern is the timing belt. I have also read that this is a relatively cheap fix, finding repair quotes as low as $200...this seems to be a no brainer to fix so it will probably be something I look into if I do buy the car. I have always liked the styling of the A4's and absolutely love the interiors. The other problem area I have found is the exhaust system. Any other areas I should look for?? I will be taking the car to the local Audi dealership to have a full point inspection done but would like to hear from experienced owners of Audis of troublesome areas. Also, dumb question, but how do I check to see if it's FWD or AWD Quattro.
You can check the car I am looking at online at www.patelautos.com once your at the page click on the 'marcas' link, then scroll to 'Audi' then click on A4. The car I am looking at is the beige 2000 A4. Looking forward to your advice, thanks guys!

If traffic isn't bad where you live, go manual for sure. Sometimes I wish I had a 5 speed so I could supercharge later on down the road, but then I realize that being on the clutch in Seattle traffic wouldn't be a whole lot of fun. Next time around I'm going manual.
I purchased a 2000 1.8TQ 5 speed and have just loved the feeling... yes, even if traffic. It's just that much more of a drivers car. Having a tip. would be ok but I now I would miss the manual.
Yes, definiately have it checked out... after that enjoy your new wheels.

that's a 2.8, not a 1.8t.
wood is in the 2.8, plus you can tell by the wheels. the regular 1.8t non-sport wheels on that year a4 are some of the cheapest wheels ever.
i am still looking at pictures from that link...wow that's sketchy.
it's clearly a 2.8...leather, woodgrain, wheels for the 2.8 model, but it looks like they stuck a 1.8t badge on there.
watch yourself...
Ok, now i am just plain confused...
i was looking at other audis on there, the 2003 grey model has wood grain interior, but also has the 1.8t badge...what's goin' on?
where are you located and do they make audis different there?

also, i have to say, i love tiptronic. i've got an '02 a4 with tip and it is simply fantastic. i never drove an older a4, so i don't know how the older tiptronics compare. i know they improved the tiptronic transmission greatly on the newer models.
Hey everyone, thanks for the responses!!! Ok, this is def an A4 1.8T not the 2.8L. I live in Panama City, Panama and I know that sometimes the cars here have different standard options then in other parts of the world. I was doing some price checking over at www.autotrader.com and all the 2000 A4's there do not have wood interior, I was told that wood interior is a standard feature for the Audis in 2000 over here (good thing). Also, today I ventured back to the dealer to check it out again and take it for a roadtest, he didn't have it and said that they were cleaning the leather upholstery, I am a naturally paranoid person, even moreso when shopping for a used car from a used car salesman!! [:'(] So I will wait until I have it checked out by a qualified Audi mechanic, def don't want to be buying someone elses headache here.
About the the tiptronic vs. 5spd, Panama city driving can be a living hell, especially if you are caught in rush hour traffic. I have a 5 spd now and hate driving it in the city, so the tiptronic is a easy choice for me. Any other things I should look for let me know, thanks fellas!
