if you used full syn and a large filter i dont think its possible for sluge to occure. How many miles on the car and with how many miles were on it when you got it?

 

Sadly, we didn't use the larger filter until after the Audi memo recommended its use. It's a shame that a car that got fully synthetic oil (except for the oil that came in it from Germany), only went 38,280 miles before it died due to a stubby filter. Oddly, when it was replaced, the Service Advisor said that it really wasn't a sludge problem but more an oil pump "issue" that restricted the lubrication. I never got to see any of the replaced parts, so I can't really comment if it was sludged. It drove great until it locked up. We have an extended warranty and definately use precaution and keep those receipts.

 

the "sludge" is what clogs up the oil pump. You can drop the oil pan and clean everything to prevent/fix this problem.

 

Sounds like a worthwile day job! I'm going to do that, but what is this about a bigger filter?

The larger filter can be found if you look up a 01+ a4 filter. Its about 1/2" longer and much fatter than the normal filter. It holds about a 1/2quart more oil than the standard filter. If you need bigger, you can get a NAPA filter....aka, THE BIG KAHUNA.
