Car dying when driving

Have autozone pull the codes. Just because a CEL isn't on doesn't mean that codes aren't stored.
My money is on a very dirty throttle body.

Clean the TB with some carb cleaner and a toothbrush. This is the easiest place to start, and if you can see it was real dirty, thats probably the cause of your idle problems. I had a very similar problem recently, and that fixed it.
If not, at least you'll have a clean TB! and then you can go from tere, especially if you have any codes.
You should be able to clean it with it still attached to the engine. You'll have to take the intake hose off obviously, and possibly the MAF sensor as well (probably wouldn't hurt to clean that while you have it off as well).
The easiest way to do a TBA without a vag-com is to disconnect the battery for a few minutes (make sure you have your radio code before doing this), reconnect it, then turn the ignition on (but don't start the car) and leave it on without the engine running for a couple minutes.

id be willing to bet your looking at some kind of boost leak. That is basically the exact thing my car was doing this weekend. Every time i put the clutch in without giving it gas my car would die. If you maintain a little throttle and stay around 1x rpm you should stay running but you gotta use 1 foot and gas/brake at the same time to brake. found the hose for recirc. from my bov was disconnected and once i got at least semi-connected my car will run again. Im not saying it is at the dv or anyhting. but try to find a boost leak somewhere.
