check engine light
you have to scan it with either a vag-com or a generic obd2 scanner. loaner tools are usually available at autozone for free, although they will usually make you leave a deposit for the cost of the scanner. the port to plug into is either under your dash on the driver side, or next to the rear ashtray on the center console. i believe they moved it under the dash in 99-00
Buy a bottom-of-the-line generic OBD II "pocket scanner" when they go on sale at $60 at your local Pep Boys, AZO, or Kragen/Schuck/Checkers. Even if you later spring for the full RossTech VAG-COM, you will find the pocket scanner very convenient for initial assessment of MILs. You may even want to carry it in your glovebox to assess the urgency of any MIL you get whilst out on the road.

to simply turn off the light, you will have to reset it, but then again, u will need a VAG-COM for that...
