Default Clicking Sound

2002 A4 1.8T Quattro Tip

Never really noticed this so before not sure what it is. There is a clicking sound in pairs of two. It will click...(count in your head to about 1) and then click again...it does this about 3 times maybe a few more depending on the occasion and then stops. Happens when accelerating from an idle position. And sometimes sporadically. Noise seems to be coming from driver's side of dash closest to the window. Can't really pinpoint it though...thoughts?

does it click only when turning? it could be a symptom for CV boots wearing out or getting low on grease.

CL those are some strong adjectives...it is not nearly as loud as what you make it sound like. It's about a third of the loudness of your turn signal. And it seems to be coming from right out of the vent on the driver's side closest to the window. It doesn't appear to matter if you are turning...only when accelerating. I don't remember every hearing the problem when I test drove it. I didn't have the radio code so I drove it in silence the first few times until I figured it out. Hopefully this isn't the precursor to something horrible but I am having some work done this week to fix a few vag codes which I doubt are related. I'll have it examined I guess.

it may be an exhaust leak or a failing cat if it's something that happens only when accelerating. you should get your car vaged and post the codes on here.

yeah,

I have the very same symptom on a 2002 A6 2.7T... also random. It sems to happen on acceleration and steady-speed driving - haven't noticed it on breaking.

I took it to the dealer, they calimed it was a normal relay click. I disagree - it's annoying, does not happen in similar vehicles I've driven, and it's not conistent enough to be "normal".

It does sound like a relay click...

Let me know if you get any more info on this.. I'm collecting ammunition to go back to the mecahnic with
