clogged breather hose fix
hello. I just purchased a 1998 Audi A4 Quattro. I has very low mileage @ 83000. On top of that, the car looks immaculate. After driving less than a day and only 30 miles, I noticed smoke emanating from under the hood. It was then that I realized there were oil leaks. Upon further research, I discovered that this model had a class action suit for oil sludge build-up in both the breather hose assembly and the engine. This would result in oil pressure pushing oil out of the weakest link. I then examined the breather hose and, lo and behold, it was gunked up with sludge. So today I decided to do a little work on the car. I replaced the oil with Mobile 1 Synthetic 5 - W30 oil plus I cut out the longer link of the breather hose and used heater hose as a replacement.
I notice so far considerable pick -up. It is as if a surgeon did a by pass to the car. Unfortunately people do not realize what kind of car they have when they purchase an Audi. The abuse it, maybe not intentionally but naively, by using the wrong type of oil and gas. Then they take it to mechanics who have no clue. It is comparable to having surgery done in North Korea!
Anyway, tomorrow I plan to spray some engine degreaser around to eliminate all the sludge and gunk that has accumulated around the engine block. It still is smoking and I am hoping this is just remnant oil still burning off. Next, I wish to change out more of the corroded breather tube + also the check valve and suction pump valve.
So here are my questions. Are the connections to the valves "one use" clips or are the reusable? Can I try soaking this and / or blowing them out to clean vs replacing? I notice from reading various sites that there is a second shorter breather tube. Where is this located?
Thanks for your help in advance. Also... should I add some cleaners into the oil or just allow the synthetic oil to do the job?
