clutch/tranny problems?
Hey all,
I just bought a 98 Audi A4 1.8t. I have a 1,000 mile/1 month warranty, and the salesman insured me that everything was perfect on the car. i drove home for 45minutes and i noticed at a stoplight that when i accelerated in first, the car was making a bad chattering sound. (sounds like a baseball card in bike spokes, but obviously a lot worse) When i get into second, everything is fine. I havea feeling its the clutch, but everything seems to be shifting fine. If it is, do you think the dealer is obligaated to fix it under the warranty. im afraid he'll say that it is a wear and tear part. fortuently it has only been about 3 hours since i bought it. Any opinions would be great.

"Insured" or "assured"? Doesnt sound like a clutch problem. Were you giving it a lot of gas when it happend? Does ithappenall the time?Does it happenonly when the clutch is engaging? Sounds like the engine is detonating to me. Have them scan for fault codes first if nothing else is obvious. But when you say "baseball card/spokes" that immediately makes me think "detonation." Detonation happens when the a/f ratio is too lean (too much air/boost, or not enough fuel.)
Hi,
yeah i was on it pretty hard on the way home (first time with the car
) If it was detonation, then why would it stop completey after im in second gear? Also, it is insured.
Thanks

How does a carsalesman give you insurance on anything? I can see how he would assure, or reassure you that its in good shape, but ive never heard of a salesman offering insurance on anything. That would make him personally liable for any damage- which doesnt make any sense. A warranty is not the same thing as insurace, or being insured. The engine is under different loads depending on what gear you are in regardless of how much gas you are giving it. So detonation could happen only in a certain gear under a certain load. You need to be a little more specific in your description, and also answer the questions that people ask when they are trying to help you out.
