Default CVT Question

Ok im new here so excuse me if this is in the wrong section.

Im planning on buying a 2003 Dolphin Gray 1.8T A4 within the next two months hopfuly! Anyways I havent driven one of these yet and have a question about the CVT transmission, does it alow you to drive in regular automatic when you want, and then change it to be able to manually shift up and down gears when you want (without the clucth).

I was just wondering because I was looking and noticed that they have the up and down arrows and though it looked like fun

Stupid question but the help would be most appreciated.

Thanks

CVT doesn't have a clutch. I also didn't think you could switch gears since it doesn't really have set gear ratios. I thought you just put it in drive, but I don't know, I have never driven a CVT.

The tiptronic tranny does what you are talking about. You can put it in full auto or switch it out so you can shift yourself.

BUMP, someone with a CVT will help you.

Ok sweet thanks so much I actuly think tiptronic was what I was looking for becauce I really would prefer manual transmission but around here it gets really hectic and automatic would be much better for it but I want to be able to shift my self when im able to.

Much Thanks

But I am still a bit curious about how CVT works if anyone wants to point it out.

Yes, the tip is probably what you want. Manuals rule, but if you are in traffic a lot etc, the auto may be best for you.

As for the CVT (continuously variable transmission), I think you just put it in drive and go. If you want some technical info on how it works, go to:

Default RE: CVT Question

Hey, I have a CVT B6. It has the Tiptronic setting too. But yea the CVT doesnt' have gears, but when I put it in Tip mode to switch manually, I get six settings. Its kind of like having a 6 speed. I heard the B7 CVT Tiptronic has seven settings, so you can switch all the way up to 7.
