Default damn central locking...

First of all, I have trawled through all of the old posts to see if I could find what I was looking for, but no joy as such.

Ive heard that the locking system on a4's was changed pre 1997 from a vacuum pump system to something else, can anyone verify this/deny it? Basically, the central locking system on my car just packed up for (seemingly) no reason. The fuses are fine, and indeed the interior lights still come on when I try to unlock with the remote. All doors now need to be locked and unlocked manually (seriously uncool looking). When I press the buttons on the remote, i can hear a faint buzzing, like its trying to do something. Im assuming at this point that the pump needs replaced, anyone is welcome to comment. Does anyone know if its just one central pump, and if so where would I find it? Is it possible that something has just come loose?

I know this is a boring post, but it seems to be a common problem, so the info should be helpful to a few people.

Cheers guys.

97's have the vacuum pump. You really should purchase a Vag-Com to scan the central locking system for fault codes. sounds to me though like a bad pump.
