How do you know if the control arms are bad? Does it make a clunking noise when braking hard, mine does. 2001 a4 79K miles.
TREs and control arms will both clunk, a visual inspection is the best way to go.

Yes. Both Tie Rod Ends and Control Arms wear will cause clunking when braking hard. If you need to replace your Tie Rod Ends without the freebie from the dealer please make sure you go for Meyle's new reengineered Tie Rod Ends. They have taken out the weakest link and replace it with a full metal setup ala BMW M3 style. They are $73.36 a set at my store with free shipping.

yea, i tried to have mine done for free and had no such luck. so i just replaced them my self, bought the kit off of ecstuning . this is probably the most common thing to go on our cars.
How long did it take you ? Did you need any special tools?

no, torque wrench ofcourse. the hardest part for me is getting the upper control arms in and out of their pinch housing thing. most have the devil bolt to deal with but i was lucky and didnt.

ooh and one side took me like 3hrs, but once i knew what i was doing i had the other side replaced in less than an hr.

Someone else brought this up so here's some clarifications.

More info on Meyle can be found here www.Meyle.com

$73.36 a set is for the Improved Full Metal Tie Rod Ends by Meyle.

As for control arms, Meyle also makes them with the improved ball joints(lower front) and heavy duty bushings(lower rear). I will be happy to put together a special package for AF members if there are enough interest. Currently price for the lower front(left and right) is $167.34 shipped. The lower rear(left and right) is $213.18 shipped. PM me if you are interested. I can knock 10% off if there are 5 people.
