OK so i just bought this 2001 2.8 A4 quattro 70k. The Oil Min light came on. I brought it back (to the dealer) and he said it was slightly low so he filled it and i left. I reported the same thing so he did a dipstick test. He marked the dipstick and i brought it back 1000 miles later. He said it was ok and that i might have to add a quart here and there. So this has happened 1 more time since then, so i added a quart. So what gives? If the oil is supposed to be changed every 10k, why does the min light come on every 3k or so. He tells me its not burning oil, but where is the oil going? Does anyone think its normal. Any similar situations or comments would be appreciated...thanks

 

Take it to another mechanic and see what they think. I don't think you should be re-filling your oil every 1k miles.

 

We've had problems with turbos seeping out oil, but yours is a 2.8.
A, from a independant shops point of view, i would recommend changing your synthetic every 5,000 miles. 10,000 miles just leaves too much room for sludge issues to happen.
B, take it to a well respected independant shop in your area. The misconneption is that dealer mechanic know everything about your car, but in reality, we have had both a dealer mechanic, and an independant mechanic working for us, and all the dealer mechanic wanted to do is replace things, rather than repair things.(no offense to any respectable dealer mechanics out there)
I beleive that you will be much more satisfied with an independant shop because their lives depend on it. Dealers dont have to care about peoples cars, because it does not effect them in any way. You'll also notice that the charges are MUCH less expensive.
C, If you are still under warranty and oil leak would be covered in your warranty, tell them that you they have to repair your oil leak, or you will report it, and if they do not repair the leak in 3 tries, they legally have to buy back to vehicle.

definitely should not be adding oil that often. if your burning oil that fast you may not be using the right oil for your car. unless there is a slow leak you cant see under the car, gasket, pan, filter, or block. recommended motor for you car and model below. good luck!

If you do alot of downnshifting it will go through oil. I had that problem.

 

change ur oil every 5k miles not 10k if you change ur oil every 10k miles youre bound to have problems . and those 2.8's burn some oil. also have you checked for leaks?

 

I have a 2.8 30V with 150k+ miles. Just so you know, the dipstick is only reading 1 quart. If you check it just after you drove it, the oil will be up in the engine and need a few min to seep back in. With higher compression ratios, modern engines burn more oil. I've researched this topic and found that many cars, Mercs, Audis, VW, etc... burn 1 quart between changes. My engine burns less than or about 1 quart between 4k mile oil changes. Try reading the oil yourself to really understand whats happening. From what i understand this engine will burn oil naturally, but not an excess of it. Personally i think your car is fine. Independent shop is crucial.
