Did the dealer screw me on new wastegate
I have a 2001 A4 Quatro (AWM Engine Code),90k miles.
I'vebeen trrying to trackdown a P0171code (System Lean, Bank 1)through searching and reading a lot on this forum and a previous post of mine:
https://www.audiforums.com/m_490579/tm.htm
In short, I've changed plugs, new 02 sensor (old one was definately bad), ran a can of seafoam through the intake manifold and one through the gas tank, replaced the vac hoses on the manifold, checked the L and Y and other hoses (seem fine), and cleaned the MAF with MAF cleaner.
I took it to the dealer for a newwheel bearing and told them to go ahead and see if they could diagnose the P0171. They said it was the wastegate (058-906-283-F) and talked me into doing that and the leakycam tensioner seal at the same time for $620. ($1360 total, including both rear wheel bearings). When I picked it up last night they said that it was still throwing the P0171 code and that the MAF must also be bad.
So I guess my question, is there anyway to diagnose a bad wastgate valve from a P0171 code, or did they just replace that on a whim?
Do you think my MAF is indeed going out and that's where the code is coming from, or are they just trying to throw another expensive part in on a guess? I've never gotten a MAF related code.
thanks!

tell them you refuse to pay for the parts, since they misdiagnosed the problem. Could be a bad MAF - buy one and throw it in. you can get one from ECStuning.com or PureMS.com - very easy to install.
definitly go back and complain if they say this will fix something and they return it to you still broken, they didnt pick up there end of the bargain, goback and bitch and complain if they give you a hard time, say BBB is your next stop. Should make them change there tune.
They are trying to screw you, to JUST replace the wastegate and nothing else around it would be REALLY hard. I'll bet money that they didn't touch it because it's hard to see and would be hard to tell if they actually replaced it.
If they are saying it's the maf, just try unpluggin it and see if it runs better, if it does then it'sa bad maf.
