I wondering what year did the A4 change over the funky cut fold out key like the new Audis/VWs?
I hear that there are some issues with them and can be costly for something that seems so simple.
Just need to know the last year for the old key or first year for the new style.

In 97-98 the fold out key was introduced, I believe 05-06 they changed the design of the fold out key again. Don't quote me on that one.

Also, prior to 97 was the key a security key or can they just be regular copies?

 

I think up until 2002 they were without a Transponder so they can all be just copies. I *think* it was the 2002 models.

My 01 A4 Quattro has the flip key that is one piece with the keyless entry. We just recently learned it will be 295.00 to get one cut and coded or whatever it is they do to make it work with the car.

 

I got mine cut at a local locksmith. I ust bought the Remote Key, matching the FCC ID (For Cars without the Transponder) and bought the key blank (HAA) from eBay for $5. It cost something like $13 to get it cut and then it's pretty simple to program them yourself.
