Default DTC Experience

Hello all,

So I've searched the threads with regard to the code that the car pulled, and from what I can tell its 1 of 2 things. 1) the gas cap/fuel tank vent was loose, or had an issue of some kind (which would be fantastic) or 2) there is a leak somewhere in the evap system (which would be considerably less fantastic, though probably not that bad.)

the code is p0442

I guess I'm just wondering if anyone else on here has pulled that code, and if so, after resetting it did it stay off, or was this something that was a continuous issue. I haven't been able to reset the code yet(apparent;y bribing the guy at autozone doesn't work) From reading previous posts I can't gather what happened after people pulled the code, found out what it was and reset it. if anyone has any experience with this let me know. I just bought this car 2 weeks ago, and if this is just a simple B.S. code that can just be reset and be fine then thats great, but if its something bigger I'd like to figure it out ASAP and get it fixed on the previous owner's dime. Thanks for your help.

If it comes back after you clear it, you will have to repair it. sometimes it is intermittent. This code is usually indicative of failure of the EVAP valve that sits firght behind the airbox. If you have a true vagcom you can test its functionality. sometimes it gets stuck with charcoal dust from the EVAP canister. Tap it a few times with a screwdriver handle. Sometimes this jars the dust out. The valve is about 50 dollars and a 10 minute DIY repair.

well, the previous owner assures me he only used premium fuel...sooo...maybe.
but, just FYI, when I got this CEL it was the first time that the car had really been driven in the cold. The car was in cali for the first 3 years of its life, and the guy never drove it here in mass., so that might have something to do with it.
I'm gonna get it reset and see what happens. my bro is a mechanic so I might use the VAG-COM at his garage and thest the functionality and see what it says. if its broken, we have lemon laws, so he'll pay for it. thanks for the help though.
