Default ECU fault in ABS unit

I have an Audi A4 2.8SE. The main display shows an error - the oil lamp and temperature icon alternately are displayed. At the same time as this happens the traction control and rpm counter are inactive. I showed the car to an Audi dealer who said "the ECU behind the dashboard needs replacing". I noticed that If I move the connectors on the ABS unit the fault sometimes clears. Someone else checked the car and confirmed there is a fault in the ECU in the ABS module and it needs replacing (so not what the dealer told me). The problem is that that unit is very expensive. Has anyone else had this type of error? What can I do? Where can I get a replacement ABS unit that is not the full Audi price? ( the refernce numbers are 0265 220 411, HR 8EO 614 111C HL, 866/15/06/5068)
