Engine choices...
Hi, long time lurker, new poster. My name is sonneboz, and I'm addicted to Audi's...
Now that we have that out of the way, I have a new guy engine question. I'm looking at either a '04 1.8T or a '04 3.0, either one will be manual. I've been told that the 1.8T was changed for the '04 model year, largely to improve the concerns that arose on the previous engines. Is this true? If so is the 1.8T more reliable than the previous versions? The only reason I'm looking at a 3.0 is the fact the I've heard horror stories about the 1.8. I'd rather get the benefit of the turbo engine (read mods), but don't want to be stuck with a blown engine.
Any advice would be appreciated,I will buy your next round of e-beer [sm=partyparty.gif]

i dont know whats so bad about the 1.8t engines. i know lots of people with over 150k and some with over 200k miles on them and they are running fine. the 1.8t will be fine if take care of it. if you abuse it and neglect sp? it then it will fall apart on you. do your part and it will take care of you
I agree with jeff, If I had had a choice in the matter I would have gotten a 1.8t, but I didn't and got a 12v but am still really happy with the car. either car will last a while if taken care of and the 1.8T is more mod friendly so I think you answered your question.
Not to mention the 3.0L engine repairs are a PITA!!!! They usually don't have to many problems except for the timing belt breaking around 75k, and the cat converters going out which is a $$$$$$$$$$$$ repair on a 3.0L about $1,000 per cat not including installation.

I understand that taking care of the vehicle will help the problems, but I'm buying it used. I don't care how clean the dealer got the engine bay, you can't tell how it was treated after some armorall and an oil change. The manual 1.8T is 10 times easier to find than a manual 3.0, does anyone go to their local auctions? How many do you see at auction?
Thanks guys!
