I don't think i ever smelled metallic bacon haha but I guess it smells something like that.

 

nope thats the wrong one. that's the crankcase breather hose which is run by the secondary air injection pump i believe. ima go get a pic for u. and sry bout the vac line comment lol i was not myself.

 

the circle is the line u need to pull. it has a one time use clamp on it which is a PITA. make sure u have new ones to replace them. the arrow is direction of flow to intake mani.

 

hiwords, I really appreciate your help, I'm going to run to the store and pick up some hose clamps before I disconnect that.
I've found where the smoke and smell is coming from, again on the passenger's side behind the engine. here's some pics:
You can kind of see that grimey dirty, wet looking stuff around there, which is what I believe causing the smoke and smell.

I took the one time use clamp off of the vac line, but to my surprise, I have zero suction through the plastic fitting the vac line rubber tube goes over. That's the correct spot for sure? Is there any reason I wouldn't have suction through there?

 

sounds like a coolant leak ( lets not get confused ) investigation required

 

I had the same burning smell/smoke issue with my '98 Passat 2.8 V6. The valve cover gaskets were leaking and oil was getting on the hot exhaust pipes.

It wasn't a coolant leak issue since the level in the reservior bottle never decreased.

did u do this? take the bottom clamp, in the circled pix, off, turn the elbow so the hole is upwards and then start the car

 

I'm getting like a sweet smell after I run the car hard and stop. No smoke though. Might be coolant?1.8T btw. Any suggestions?
