Engine smells like something's burning...
Check the rear of the right valve cover to make sure that the crankcase ventalition hose is still attached. On mine the nipple was broken off the valve cover itself. Thats where the fumes & vapors come from inside the valve cover.

Check your battery. Mine (98 A4 1.8TQ)was boiling over and the acid, over time, ate its way through the tray and it was leaking down into the exhaust. Smelt like plastic / sulfur burning. I checked the charging system, read normal, and my volt gauge was reading normal - just shy of 14v. I removed the battery, poured someCoke, cleaned it all up and placed new battery. Hope this fixes it. This is my first post by the way, this forum is great!
I have the same issue I just bought a 2004 A4 1.8T and it has a smoking coming from the passenger side of the engine as well. Mine smells like hot car possibly oil. The place where I purchased the vehicle told me that they tightened the valve gasket cover down but it hasn't stopped it yet. I have never owned an Audi before any suggestions?
