Default Engine stumbles - HELP!

I am an Audi newbie and recently purchased a 2001 A4 2.8 Quattro w/ Tipronic. (52K miles)

When accelerating with moderate throttle the car stumbles and the power flattens out in the mid-high RPM ranges (most promenent when shifting manually), if I let out or hammer it seems fine, just at mid throttle.

Could this be something simple like plugs, wires or dirty throttle body?

Any thoughts?

Hi, Welcome to the forum and the world of Audi. You will find a lot of information by checking the links at the top of the page.

Your problem could be any of the things you mentioned. If possible, get the service records for the car and see when the plugs were last changed.

You should also consider investing in a service manual such as Haynes or better the Bentley.

Get friendly with someone with a VAG-Com (or buy one). Clink on the link below for useful information.

Indeed... plugs and wires can make a world of difference! But yes, like david said... try and find out if they've been changed recently.

Do you have a CEL (check engine light)?

When I bought the car it had 1 month of warranty left on it and I had it checked out by a local dealer. They found that the ECU was bad and replaced (thank god for the warranty on that one!). Other than that I have had no CEL's.

Reading the other posts I noticed that there is talk of a coil pack recall, but I can find no information where this applies to my car, could this be a contributor? I am going to replace the plugs just for good measure anyway, any suggestions on which ones to get?

Meh, I'd get the best plugs available... go to www.ecstuning.com or something... I think their best are 4 for 59.99 or something... as for the coil pack, just go ask the dealer what years/models were affected... I know it hit the golfs and gti's, wasnt sure if it was a prob on the audi's or not.

You'll need 6 plugs

www.rockauto.com

NGK platinum

They should have been changed for free at 40K by the dealer.

Before you start replacing parts (esp those that may not need replacing), find someone with a vagcom and see if there are any codes stored that would point you in one direction or the other.
