Default engine temp

okay i tried searching...didnt get much back

when im driving my car the regular temp gauge (not oil temp) is usually on cold, when it sits like at a stop sign for a little bit or in traffic the gauge goes up to a little under half way is this normal ? or should it be registering all the time...or is the engine just cooling that well ?
thanks
