Default evap purge valve

I have a 2004 A4 1.8T Quattro w/ 96,000km (the free maint. goes to 80,000km)

so the check engine light came on the other day. I drove it for a day or two (over the weekend) and called the dealership on the monday to make an appt to take it in.

When I went to start the car to take it in, the light was off! WTF...

anwyays, I take it in, and they diagnose it. They tell me that the evap purge valve needs to be replaced. They said that it'll cost $311 + Tax (CDN) for the parts and labour.

I called my mechanic, and he said he can get the part for $135, but he doesn't know when in the car it's located - VW's are usually under the hood, but the guy at the dealership told me 1.5 hrs to replace it - which means that it's not under the hood - or their trying to scam me.

Anyone have any additional info?

is this something that would be covered under mechanical warranty or something?

It's under the hood right next to the airbox. On mine there is a tab on the airbox cover that hooks onto a rubber surround that surrounds the purge valve. Easy to find, easy to replace.
