My check engine light came on and my mechanic read this code and said they need to replace the air pump.

They said it wont affect the car or damage it if i dont get it replaced, but i will have to replace it to get it smogged.

My mechanic is shady..I dont trust him. Does this info sound right, and with an estimated 600 dollar repair?
