Default Few problems

Hello, newbie here, hi to all and hope all is well. Great site.
I have a few issues with my 96 N reg A4 TDI(redi) and was hoping yous guys might be able to help me out and offer a bit of advice.
The first one being my fuel consumption, i put about £20 worth of diesel in my Audi per week and get a return of about 150 miles and the majority of that is motorway miles at about an average speed of 80 mph. There is obviously a bit of town travelling in that too, maybe about 30 miles? I was just wondering if that seems like a decent return or if i should be getting more??
The second issue i have is that the car sometimes takes a lot of attempts to start, no problem with the battery or the starter motor, its like air in the system or something?? It just sort of ticks over ill give it some gas but it just fades. Sometimes it'll go fine then other times i find myself taking as many as 7 starts to get going.
any help much appreciated!!

ur car is suck more gas than ma friend's 5.9L truck lol. i would change ur air filter, fuel filter, check ur tire pressure, and spark plugs.
as for the stalling, ur saying it runs and then ticks while it fades out? sounds like ur not getting enough fuel. i would def change the parts i listed about first and see wut happens. hopefully u don't need to change that fuel pump. also are u getting any check engine lights?

That isn't great mileage for a deisel. I get better than that with a gasoline 1.8T.

Unfortunately, the TDI engine isn't imported into the US, where most of us are located. You might try the Volkswagon forums, as the TDI engine is available here on the VQ. They would have much more experience.

My guess would be a possible problem with the glow plugs, or a fuel pressure problem, but those are guesses. I would suggest that you find someone with a vagcom in your area (use the vagcom locator link) and pull the codes from the engine.
