First Car!!!!
Well i would have to say go for the 1.8T. I have a 1997 Audi A4 1.8T with 101,000 miles and i have never had a problem. Plus woudnt the insurence on the 1.8T be less than 2.8 due to horsepower? and the 1.8T is a fun car if you gets some mods into it. has a lot more potential than the 2.8. If i had to do it all over again i would have gone with the same car but manual.
I would never cut my springs
nor put a huge wing on, i only accept clean work, thats not the issue though..do you guys think that it would be worth it in the long run to get a honda/toyota/nissan now and save up for a 2000 or so 1.8t or should i buy the 97 now and mod it up?

I am 23 rolling in a 2001 a4 1.8tqm... I just got the car about 5 months ago... learning a lot... best lesson i've learned so far is not to go to the stealership!! for that reason exactly they charged me $160 for an oil change and to top off the fluids... but somethings will need to be taken there... especially on an older car. I bought the car from my older bro when he got his a6 2.7ttq I pay about $200 a month so i consider myself very lucky to be driving this car at this age for that price. I would buy the 1.8tqm, but have it checked out by your local reputable mechanic beforehand... and as stated above you will not be disappointed... also save about 400-500 and get a chip... night and day...

yeah being 16 I dont think an audi is the way to go. I make a decent living and more then make ends meet , but lets say my audi has an issue like a tranny rebuild or engine throws a t belt and needs a new long block. Then I will most likely be sunk or close to it. But I have a good warranty that covers most of it. If you can get a warranty then do it, make sure its reputable and I think youll be fine. But thoughts still linger on maintenance, premium fuel[:@], and the what if factor.
IMHO get something cheaper, and more reliable that takes the cheaper regular gas like a toyota. No worries there. Now if Mommy and Daddy are paying for the car and maintenance then by all means get the audi.

benifit of working on your own car is because you know how things work, you see worning signs faster and that usually leads to you preventing a expensive repair.
i say get a 97 1.8t MANUAL!!! and have fun, expect to pay right around 6 if your patient

Ok dont say I didnt tell you so. How much have you spent on both of your a4s you speak of? I bet you could have had one nice newer less mileag car or a nice modded one with tons of cash left over. But hell I was 17 once in your postition, what the hell is that worth anyways

This is a nice german car so it is not a japanese car.
So if you'll mod it right, yeah go ahead and buy an audi, otherwise go and buy civic.

I think a 1st car for a 16 yr old should be something stock and rice-as in a 90's civic sitting on 14's with a 1 inch exhaust. Get to know cars in general and how to work on them, then buy an audi in a couple years. You may have enough for a 10 yr old a4, but youll likely spend half of what you paid for it in repairs/maintnance even if you do it yourself. A4-especially the 1.8t is not the best 1st car for someone your age who is paying for everything youself imo.
im 17 , 18 in a few months i bought my audi maybe...5 months ago its a 96 2.8L w/ 52k miles for 8K i have yet to need any repairs and although i am disappointed that its hard to get HP but i love the AUDI. Its amazingly smooth , runs well, beatiful interior and looks like god. So if you feel ur ready for an audi get it.. but make sure it hasnt been beat on for 100k miles and be ready for a big bill if something breaks. i'd recomend a 1.8TQM, oh and if ur wondering i bought it myself.
