Hi there,
Does anyone know what it takes to change out the rack in a 1998 Audi Avant 2.8 ltr? I pulled into work yesterday and the power steering fluid is pouring out of boot above the left front tire. I am hoping that it is a pressure hose and not the rack. It will be checked out tomorrow at a local mechanic. Is it an expensive job? I am reasonably mechanically inclined and am not afraid of tackling this job however I would have to drive the car 50 miles home to get it back to my garage and I don't want to cause anymore damage.

98avant, i tried posting a couple rack threads and wasn't able to find much help as far as performing a DIY. jest informed me that parts are about a grand, and labor at a shop will be about 500. so it's a big one. it sounds like, if it's a fairly large leak, then that would be a hose, that happened to my car.

Thanks for the input. I just got the estimate from the mechanic ~ $850 including labor so I guess that I should consider this a steal. I bought this car for $8k with 80k on the odometer and have put $2k of repairs into it in 7 months, all in the front end! I am considering selling it after winter in the northeast is over. Anyone interested????

 

Now that you have done all the work, lots of people would be interested.

I bought mine with 75K 7 months ago and have put 25K miles on it since and have only had to put in minor repairs for things I knew were broken when I bought it.
