Default Fuel milage...

I seem to remember a couple threads a while back about A4's mpg and just thought I'd share my milestone (pun intended) with you. I just broke 450 miles on a tank full- low fuel light came on at 447 and I averaged 32.4 miles per gallon. That's back and forth driving to work, no AC, and windows down. Tank before that was the same driving schedule but with 90* days and running the AC a lot and only got 29mpg. Since the t-belt/thermostat/DV replacement I've been getting 30.5 to 31.7, the 29mpg was the lowest yet. Still, before the parts went on my best was only 28- guess that t-stat and DV really needed changing...

It's really not that hard to get low 30's with the 1.8 engine...

When you're going 40, what gear are you in? In normal driving, my engine never goes over 2500, and when i'm cruising it's at 2000 or lower.

Breaking the 31.7 mpg seems impossible to me, and I too am wondering what I did differently this last tank. I'm always using Shell 93 v-power because it's the cheapest premium gas I can find. I almost always fill up at the same station so I don't think the brand or grade of fuel has anything to do with it. Most of my driving is highway though. I noticed the biggest jump in economy when I changed the t-stat and DV durning my t-belt job. Before that my temp gauge ran about only a quarter of the way up so I think it was stuck open and the engine was running too cool. Since the change the needel is straight up. Also, the DV was the orginal with 195,000 miles on it and the car always seemed to "stutter" under harder acceleration in 2nd and 3rd gear. Now it only does that when it's cold- probably should try changing the spark plugs next.

And so you know, it is a 1.8t quattro sport with over 196,000 miles and a bad wheel bearing and in need of some new tires...
