Wait, how is keeping your cars engine where it uses the most fuel efficient? If you're racing your engine at 4000+rpm and going 35, and I'm at about 1500 and going 35, how can you possibly think that you're using less fuel than I am? Yes theoretically, the engine is 'most efficient' at it's powerband peak, but that's only because the turbocharger is delivering the most boost into the engine and it's wasting the least amount of energy. Peak power is not peak fuel economy.

Well, operating the car in it's peak power band should be the most efficient, especially when crusing. From the feel of it (as I have not dyno'd the car ever) 4000 is starting to get out of the torque curve. My 1.8t had torque down low (at 1500) but it's max torque is much higher in the rpms. Using 35mph is not a good example because you wont get very good gas milage even if you're keeping your engine at 1500 rpms. I believe the key to good gas milage is to keep the engine in the peak of the torque curve while in the highest gear possible for the speed you need to go (so in my 5-speed I believe my torque curve peeks over 3K, which makes sense since that's where it revs when doing the speed limit) Cars are designed to run at their peak at those speeds (65-75), that is why people usually get better milage during highway driving.
My car is a quattro/sport/manual/1.8t with a lot of miles on her. Honestly, if I didn't get over 27mpg I probably wouldn't own the car anymore. For those of you that are getting less than 300 miles to a tank full, what kind of mods do you have? I understand this kind of car is peppy, but at these prices for gas it's easy for me to drive normal, and normal is all I'm driving. I'm not coasting down hills or drafting tractor trailers down the highway... but there is one small secret I'll share with you.... I use the cruise control as much as possible. I find it hard to keep the car at a steady speed when I don't. Constantly pressing the gas pedal and releasing it to keep the speed constant is robbing you of your milage. Try it, you'll see.
Oh, and I haven't gotten less than 400 miles to a tank since the t-belt change

If i was getting 30 mpg i would be crying.............in happiness. I only get about 24, but every once in a while i have the urge to take off with my "leadfootitus"so i guess i really can't complain all that much.
Update: Next tank full wasn't as good, but I managed to hit 453.1 miles and averaged only 31.2 mpg. Low fuel light came on at 437 miles this time and I've been running the AC a bit this past week.
Sorry to keep bringing this back to the top, but I think my engine is about to die---- I just got 33.9 mpg on my last tank of fuel. I think if I would have tried I could have made it to 470 miles.
