FWD vs Quattro & test drive
The use of a FWD audi is the same as the use of every other FWD car... only the Audi would be much nicer in many ways!
So you're saying that a FWD audi owner might have been just as well off having bought an Accord or Camry?
I'm quite sure that you're ignorant on this topic bud... and on others. The 4motions were indeed available with a 5 speed... even a 6 speed if you opted for the W8.
*cough* Ignorant...

EDIT: And you bought a 12v 2.8? Those are soooo worthless!
*sarcastic post, not to be taken seriously by the 12v owners. I am indeed capable of seeing good in cars that might not be deemed 'worthy' by the above poster*

Well, here's MY opinion:
I doubt that too many people are seeking out FWD's...they would definitely be the minority. OK, so that might not be true, but come on, would you really let reduced vehicle weight and the mechanical truth that fewer working parts = less to go wrong outweigh the amazing technology and safety of the quattro? There is no f*n' way I would ever pass on quattro. I would not buy Audi if I didn't have the ability to get AWD.
No offense to the FWDers, but it would seem that pro-FWD is a defensive standpoint; if you already own one, obviously you CHOSE FWD, so you have to be pro-FWD or you wouldn't be content with your choice of auto. Sort of like how guys with small wee-wee's are quick to assert that size doesn't matter, and it's all about technique.
Maybe so if you're rEALLy good....

Well, it could be that they 'chose' FWD, or maybe they just didn't have the money for Quattro. When buying new, it adds a lot of money.
Maybe they were already at their limit making the switch from Accord to A4, and spending a few more grand on Quattro just wasn't going to happen. Did they make a mistake? No. Could they have gotten a better equipped Audi? Yes.
The thing is... Quattro is amazing. It's safe, and it adds a performance factor, and it really isn't any less reliable. You pay for it a bit in terms of gas and acceleration, but yeah, most of us here think it's worth it.
But a lot of the time you see a FWD A4 selling for crazy cheap... you can't really tell the guy who buys it that he's purchased a "worthless" car.
It'd be a beautiful car, just like all the other Audis we drive... it'd just be powered by 2 wheels.
If Audi didn't offer Quattro, there's a good chance I'd still be driving an Audi. I love the style, I love the handling, I love the interior... it's just a very well put together car.
This topic has been discussed before... It's pretty narrow minded to say that any Audi without Quattro is garbage. It's still an Audi. Do you have an all wheel drive piece of junk?

Ok, I was wrong - just under the impression they only came as autos - my mistake - i can admit when I'm wrong
I got my 12v for less than 3 grand... I don't think anyone would've passed on that...
About this dumb debate... I'm saying buying a FWD audi is like buying a corvette with a 4 cylinder engine - sure it's nice and all but there's not a lot to enjoy as far as the drive train goes..

I'd enjoy the drivetrain if it weren't a 12 valve.
Seriously though, as much as I can respect the 12 valves many great qualities, I'd never buy one. I'm not going to flame it or call it worthless, though.
Maybe somebody picks up a 98 front track with less miles than your old 12v, and they pay 4 grand... is their car worthless?
Just think before you type!

I never considered Quattro (lower gas mileage) before I noticed that 2004+ AWD models have 6 speed manual vs FWD 5 speed.
That 6th gear will help with gas mileage on the freeways. Also, quattro handles better + from all the posts I read FWD is only ~0.X faster..

It's simple, Fwd puts more power on the floor. since they have the same engine they have the same power capabilities but the fwd will put more on the floor and thus will be faster. You dont have an advantage off the line as long as the fwd driver knows how to launch then once your rolling you have less power and are heavier
Unless we go into the twisties, then you got the advantage
dont get me wrong i want quattro but my car was a good deal at the time so thats what happened.
