I just bought the car, it's a 1998 a4 quattro with automatic triptronic. I have been experiencing problems with my gas, i just put three gallons in and my tank was at a quarter, it dropped to empty within 20 miles and I was not driving it hard. It seems to me that it is either eating gas at an unusual rate or that the gauge is off. I have also noticed that is smells like exhaust fumes or gas inside the cabin at times. I'm looking to get some help with this, any information is helpful. thank you.

 

hopefully what you have is an erratic fuel gauge. if you check out the DIY section of this forum you'll find a writeup on it. try that first. as for the fumes, it's probably an exhaust leak.
